Do housing co-ops decommodify housing? It depends

Written by Saki Bailey for Shareable, the article discusses the widespread assumption that housing cooperatives necessarily imply affordable, multi-unit housing solutions. It tackles the question of whether housing cooperatives always decommodify housing. Although in general housing cooperatives do provide prices that are below market rates, when answerinf this question one needs to consider whether the initative considered is a market-rate stock co-op, a limited equity housing co-op (LEHC), or a zero-equity co-op (ZEC) stewarded by a community land trust (CLT) to assess whether it is accessible to low-to-medium income workers.
