The Kalkbreite: Participative housing planning in Zurich

The Kalkbreite is a Zurich-based cooperative housing project in line with the Zurich model for cooperative housing, based on city-owned plots of land leased to cooperatives with long-term contracts (for instance, 60 years tenure). In this article originally written by Nicole de Vries for Shareable, one of the residents shares their experience at the Kalkbreite, describing the process of inclusive, early-involvement participative planning that brought the cooperative housing project to life. Early involvement also meant increased transparency and substantial informal dialogue, alongsite planning work. For instance, involved people and prospective residents were warranted a hourly rate for their participation in the planning, after they contributed the first 20 hours voluntarily.
